These past few weeks have been a lot of fun in my studio. I particpated in a mini virtual painting class doing portraits using a lot of unusual colors. That was very challenging for me! One of my paintings looked like Shrek thanks to the green (which I scraped), another was orange and blue and definitely not in a good way. I still really enjoyed the experience and even had a few successes. Then my own style started creeping in, the colors became more toned down, and the people more "realistic" looking and less artsy... take a look below for some photos. So far I have done seven, with two wiped, leaving me with five portraits. Such fun!
In additon to attempts at painting changes, I have started making some business changes this month. It seems that Instagram wants to be more similar to TikTok, and the visual artists have been feeling the pinch. A photo of a painting used to be enough to get views (thus purchases) from followers, after all a painting is a visual object. With the new algorithm, Instagram is controlling who sees what we post like never before. "Reels" or short videos, are being pushed and even paid for. There is even an option to earn money with reels, which I have not done (yet?)...
Up until about a month ago, my Instagram page was still my personal account. Recently I decided to try changing that to a business account. I am also throwing things at Instagram and seeing what sticks. It is kind of fun and I'm trying to have a positive attitude about making videos when I really prefer to NOT be on camera, seen or heard! :D Have you noticed any changes? What are you liking or not liking? Is there anything you'd like to see more of? I'm very happy to hear ideas and take suggestions.
Stay well, stay warm/dry, and talk soon!

Hallie — I LOVE getting this in my email. I admire your artistic journey so much and am eager to have a bird’s eye view of what you’re doing. I have noticed that my Instagram feed seems less enjoyable than it used to be — I hadn’t realized why. Congratulations on seeing it as a challenge— lemonade out of lemons. Seeing a video would be awesome!
